Always make sure your dog has fresh drinking water!

Read your dogs' food label, this is as important as reading your own food labelling.

The first ingredient should be meat, not meat meal or chicken meal or bone meal, just meat. When you see the word "meal' it doesn't only mean meat it means whatever else fell into the grinder from the animal will also be in your dog's food. The foods protein source should be the first item listed. This cannot be stressed enough. This is where your dog will be receiving most of his/her nutrition.

You also  need to steer clear of certain composites of your dog's food as well. These are the fillers. Fillers are ingredients  such as corn, brewer's rice, & beet pulp that have little or no nutritional benefit for your dog.

Like humans dogs need more than just meat. They too find vegetables and grains beneficial. When your dog is ready to eat they are not particular  about what shape or whether the food is red or green or any other colour. Stay clear of artificial colourings which are found in many dog food varieties. Colourings and certain artificial preservatives are not needed in dog food and these ingredients may also cause your dog to have allergies.

Please do not change the food formula your breeder has advised you to use.
It is a good idea to continue feeding the same type and brand of puppy food and use the same feeding schedule the puppy was on before he/she came to you

Change the puppy formula to an  ARTEMIS Fresh Mix Adult or ARTEMIS OSOPURE Adult, do this gradually over one week.  An abrupt diet change will upset his system before the bacteria in his intestines adjust to the new regimen, change the diet slowly to prevent puppy/dog diarrhea.

As an adult the dog should have breakfast and dinner. Feeding two smaller meals instead of one large meal per day will lessen the risk of your dog bloating. Click here for bloat article.

What you have fed your dog from the age of 12 months should be all he requires as an adult.

If at any stage the dog does not have a waistline, reduce the the meal size and increase the exercise.

***Food additions that are given to our dogs, as treats, on a regular basis:

Twice weekly our dogs are given boiled eggs, sardines in oil, carrot & apple.

Remember "If your dog is too fat, YOU are not getting enough exercise."

food guarding
Guarding of food and other resources is a common problem. Often it is made worse by bad advice, such as "practice taking your dog's food away", which only makes aggression worse. In this article, Kaye explains the method of "approaching to give not to take."
